DAY 69

STORY #69

Bill's Narrow Escape

The pony galloped full-tilt through sand and sage brush. Its rider bent low in the saddle, an old Army revolver blazing, as arrows whizzed all around him. Buffalo Bill Cody was going to get the mail through, or die trying.

Suddenly, Bill had an idea. Sliding the pony to a stop, he turned around. Quickly re-loading the pistol in his hand, he pulled a second pistol from under his shirt. Putting the reins in his teeth, Bill charged the screaming horde of painted warriors--who were so surprised and awestruck by Bill’s courage, they let him get away to freedom.

DAY 68

STORY #68

One Man's Bread

The king shook his fist at the walls of the starving town, with impotent fury. For months he’d battered the defenses, to no avail. Now he was encamped with his army, sunlight glittering from ten thousand pikes and swords.

A soldier brought a man to him. “He was taking a cart of wheat to the townsmen.” The king ordered the man hung, and then told his baker to make the troops bread with the wheat. Later that night, groans arose from the camp, and by morning, the troops were dying from poisoned wheat. A dead man had saved the town.
