DAY 45

STORY #45

The Tinker's Prayer

Mrs. Brown gave birth to a strapping boy. Her husband came home from a journey, and said, “Yon child seems nae well.” His wife sobbed, “He’s been that way since the old peddler was here.” And the baby was poorly, ever after.

One day, a young tinker named Davy came. Spying the child, he cried, “That be a changling!” He yanked a pouch from his pocket, full of black ashes. Closing his eyes, he mumbled a prayer, blowing ashes over the babe--who instantly became well again. “Were a fairy stole yer babe--but he’s back now, aye, all’s well.”

DAY #44

STORY #44

Southern Exposure

There once was a mighty king, who thought he could rule the sea. He proclaimed he could make the very tides reverse on his command. Well, nobody wanted to be beheaded, so they agreed--except for one man.

There was an old merchant, who called the king a fool. A haughty noble dragged the man to the king, who was sitting by the seashore. The king asked why the man went against him--the merchant replied, “He who bends over too far, shows his bare bottom to the world.” The king laughed--then, beheaded the noble and knighted the merchant.
