DAY 73

STORY #73

The Old Maid

Watery sunlight streamed through the windows. Marie sat in her chair, looking out on the world, remembering her days as a young librarian. One day, a soldier came in, wanting a book to read--the head clerk denied him, saying he didn’t have a card. The boy left, disappointed.

Later, Marie met him at the train, giving him one of her own books. The boy smiled and, without warning, kissed her passionately. Back in the present, she looked at the book fondly, yet sadly--they’d sent it back to her, after the boy was killed on a beach in Normandy.
